01 What it does

What the slide-making-skill Skill Does in Claude Code and Codex

Summary, workflow and outputs, all read from the skill's SKILL.md.

In the Skill's Own Terms

An implementation guide for the JavaScript behind individual PowerPoint slides built with PptxGenJS, written for coding agents that each own one slide. It pins the surrounding contract first: a 10 by 5.625 inch 16:9 canvas, a theme object holding exactly primary, secondary, accent, light and bg, a synchronous createSlide exported alongside slideConfig, and a runnable standalone preview per file.

The guide specifies fonts, normal-weight body copy, palette colors, static slides and a page number badge except on the cover. Review the rendered slide, fix observed defects and verify again; text extraction alone cannot establish layout quality.

What it produces

  • A complete, runnable JavaScript file for each individual slide.
See the example prompt ↗

How It Works

  1. 01
    Read the PptxGenJS Reference First

Before writing slide code, open pptxgenjs.md for the full API surface: setup and structure, text and formatting, lists, shapes and shadows, images and icons, backgrounds, tables and charts.

  2. 02
    Keep createSlide Synchronous

The entry point must be a plain function rather than async, because the compile step does not await it.

  3. 03
    Render from the Theme Object

Every color is pulled from the passed theme — the slide background, for example — instead of being hard-coded.

  4. 04
    Export the Module Contract

Each file hands back createSlide together with slideConfig so the compile script can assemble the deck.

  5. 05
Treat QA as a Bug Hunt

Go looking for problems on the first render rather than confirming that things look acceptable.

02 Find your fit

When to Use the slide-making-skill Skill

Use the slide-making-skill skill in Claude Code or Codex when the job is PPT and slide decks of this kind. Fit and limits below are taken from the skill's own file.

Good Fit

  • Writing or repairing the JavaScript of one slide at a time, covering dimensions, positioning and the text, image and chart APIs.
  • Decks that have to come out as native PowerPoint files rather than images or HTML mockups.
  • Single-slide implementations that must follow the existing deck’s font, palette and export contract.

Know the Boundaries

  • Motion of any kind: slides carry no animations or transitions and stay fully static.
  • Opacity cannot be baked into a hex color string such as 00000020; it has to be passed as a separate property value.

What to Provide

  • Slide content and assetsProvide the slide's message, exact copy and figures, approved images, and slide number or cover status. Include the existing slide JS if this is a repair.
  • The theme objectSupply the palette or existing theme with primary, secondary, accent, light and bg. The implementation must use those keys consistently with the deck's compile script.
  • A 16:9 canvasLay the slide out on the 10 by 5.625 inch LAYOUT_16x9 frame, which the coordinates and badge position assume.

03 Inside the skill

Rules the slide-making-skill Skill Gives Claude Code and Codex

8 concrete instructions, defaults and limits the SKILL.md sets for the agent — the part of the file that changes the result.

  1. No Bold Body Copy

Body paragraphs, descriptions, captions, legends and footnotes stay at normal weight; bold is reserved for titles and headings.

  2. Palette Colors Only

Every color must come from the user-provided palette; creating or modifying colors is forbidden, and the one allowed change is transparency from 0 to 100.

  3. Solid Fills Only

Gradients are banned outright; use solid colors, optionally with a transparency value to build an overlay.

  4. Badge Every Slide but the Cover

The page number badge sits bottom-right at x 9.3 inches and y 5.1 inches, in a subtle palette color, as either a circle or a pill.

  5. Chinese Font Default

Chinese copy is rendered in Microsoft YaHei, and the font table lists no alternative for it.

  6. Exact Theme Key Names

The theme object carries primary, secondary, accent, light and bg; names such as background, text, muted, darkest or lightest must never be invented.

  7. No Hash in Hex Colors

Hex values are written as six characters with no # prefix, since adding one corrupts the output file.

  8. Shrink Long Titles

Long title text gets fit set to shrink so it scales down instead of wrapping onto a second line.

Give the Skill a First PPT and Slide Decks Task

Use this editorial example for a single slide, replacing the bracketed content and paths with your real material.

Starter prompt
Create slide 3, a product comparison slide, using [approved comparison text and figures], [image paths] and the existing theme in [project path]. Preserve the supplied facts. Write one PptxGenJS JavaScript module for a 10 × 5.625 inch slide, export synchronous createSlide and slideConfig, use the theme's five color keys, and include the page badge. Add a runnable standalone preview. Render it, inspect text and image placement, and fix any observed clipping or overlap before handing back the module and preview.

Editorial starter example based on the SKILL.md; not a recorded run.

Check the First Result

Before accepting the output, look for these in the transcript and the files:

  • Confirm the module exports synchronous createSlide and slideConfig and can generate its standalone preview.
  • Check all colors against the shared theme and all copy and figures against the supplied material.
  • Verify the 10 × 5.625 inch layout, safe text bounds and the page badge, omitting the badge on a cover.
  • Open the rendered preview to check clipping, overlap, font substitution and image quality; do not substitute extracted text for visual review.
  • Keep body text at normal weight and verify the required fonts and PptxGenJS are available in the render environment.
